On 17 June 2021, the President of the Republic of Georgia, H.E. Salome ZOURABICHVILI, visited the Congregation for Catholic Education to have a meeting with the Prefect, H.Em. Cardinal Giuseppe VERSALDI, on various issues of common interest.
The importance of integral education for the common good of societies and for the development of a culture of dialogue and tolerance was stressed, especially in a country with a rich Christian cultural and religious tradition.
The President of the Republic of Georgia, who was accompanied, among others, by the Deputy Minister for Education and Science and the Deputy Minister for Culture, referred to education and culture as priorities for the formation of future generations, as well as to innovation and technology as pillars of this development, without neglecting the importance of a sustainable ecological perspective.
The Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education presented the current developments regarding the initiative of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, for the Global Compact on Education, launched in 2019, which seeks to make human persons the centre of all educational activity, to promote the empowerment of families as the first place of education and the network between other actors in education. He highlighted thematic areas of increasing importance for research, such as the dignity of each person, fraternity and cooperation, integral ecology, and peace and cooperation, also between cultures and religions.
To promote these areas of common interest, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed after the meeting between the Congregation for Catholic Education and the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia on Collaboration in the Field of Education and Science. For the Congregation, H.Em. the Prefect signed it, for the Georgian Ministry the Vice-Minister, H.E. Dr. Nunu MITSKEVICH signed it.
